Just like grass, the most effective way to water your landscape plants is to water deeply but infrequently.Larger plants, like trees, need more water because they have deeper roots and larger root zones and can store more water. This also means they can bewatered less frequently. The 1-2-3 Rule is an easy way to remember how deeply to water:..

Installing a filter between your water source and irrigation lines will help prevent clogged emitters, especially if your garden water comes from anunfiltered source such as a lake or pond. Using valves at various places in your garden also gives you more control. In retrospect, we should haveinstalled shut-off valves to allow the greenhouse to operate independently from the rest of the watering system. Instead, we now hand-water thegreenhouse during those rainy weeks when everything else is wet, or risk turning on the whole system when it doesn’t need watering. This is somethingwe will remedy in future adjustments to our current system..

Intended for home & industrial use, the APWS control module can accommodate inputs from more than one weight sensor module. This feature and thesystems non-proprietary modularity allow users to scale and configure the APWS in many ways to meet their unique situations. For example, because theAPWS uses electronic sensors to measure when something needs water, the system could just as easily be used for plants with low soil content likecactus and bonsai plants or adding water to a fountain..

A good rule of thumb is to calculate your garden’s moisture requirements per week and then design your system todeliver that volume. Irrigation line options include the very economical drip tape (which usually requires a pressure reducer) and the more durabledrip tubing. Micro Drip Irrigation Kit (pictured left) is a complete drip-irrigation system ideal for planters, potted plants, hanging plants, andraised garden beds. MicroEase Sprinkler Conversion Kit is a more complete drip-irrigation kit for versatile drip systems in gardens and landscapes.Drip irrigation is especially compatible with berry bushes. We also use 2-3 lines of drip tubing per garden bed for most of our vegetables..

Most plants do best if the soil is allowed to partially dry out between waterings. For lawns, a loss of shine or footprints showing indicate thatit’s time to water. Vegetables and other annuals should be watered at the first sign of wilting, but tougher perennials (plants that liveseveral years) only need water if they stay droopy after it cools off in the evening. Trees and shrubs usually don’t need any watering oncetheir roots are fully established (two to five years), except in very dry years..
